Other Health Professionals

Although the Midwife and District Nurse Service was mainly based in Fovant, its nurses naturally served a similarly wide area to that covered by the doctors.

Lou Winter, of Dinton, recalls Nurse Summerton who nursed her through a severe childhood illness. On Nurse Summerton’s marriage she was followed by Nurse Grant. She in turn was followed by Nurse Davies née Frampton, who during WW I met and married an Australian soldier, Dick Davies.

The Davies family settled in the village for many years and Nurse Davies continued to serve the village from 1920 until 1926, when her increasing family made full-time work impossible. After the Second World War the family emigrated to Western Australia, except for one who chose to stay and who still lives in the village. Many villagers remember Miss Porter, our last resident District Nurse, who initially lived in a wooden bungalow on the area known as the Knap on the Dinton Road, but who moved into one of the Council Houses in Weeping Ash as soon as they were built.

Currently, provision of the services of district nurses, health visitors and all other allied health care professionals is the responsibility of the Local Primary Care Trust. Such people, no longer necessarily village based, drive considerable distances to visit and care for their patients.
