The Club is located in Fovant High Street almost in the centre of the village. The main part of the structure, with its original old stone and brick walls, is shown on the 1787 Enclosures map, probably forming the cowshed of Sling Farm. The pitched roof is made up from Clay Double Roman and Small Clay plain tiles. A flat roof extension, built from reconstructed stone was added in the 1970s to provide toilet facilities.
The Club was first opened over 40 years ago and its evolution can be examined by clicking here or by using the menu on the left. The original constitution was adopted in May 1988, but rewritten in 1999. A copy was passed to the Charity Commission and the club is now a registered charity. The trustees of the club are the management committee, all of whom work on a voluntary basis. Membership of the club is open to all young people between the ages of 5 to16 years. It opens on Friday evenings from 6 - 8 pm and caters for young people from the surrounding villages as well as those from Fovant.
Over many years the building sadly deteriorated due to a lack of funds, and became rather damp, cold and gloomy. The old building was faced with either extensive repairs or closure. So, in 1999, the committee embarked on major fund raising programme to obtain enough money for a total repair/renovation of the club. This was hugely successful. We gained grants from the National Lottery Charities Board, the Primrose Trust, Salisbury District Council, the National Association of Clubs for Young People, the Rural Development Programme and our village Fete Committee.
This very successful fund raising enabled us to renovate the club premises completely. The roof was retiled and insulated, and the addition of Velux roof windows not only improved ventilation but also gave more light. The building was completely rewired and new electric heaters installed. All windows were replaced with double glazed PVC units. A new fitted kitchen area was followed by the installation of non-slip rubber flooring and complete re-decoration. This total refurbishment programme has made the club a much brighter, warmer and friendlier place to meet.
As a Committee we are proud to have taken Fovant Youth Club into the new Millennium, to continue the work started over 40 years ago by local people who set up and started the club. Long may it continue to run for all our young people.
