Of the several National Directories published from the early 19th century onwards perhaps the most useful, for our purpose of naming people, are those known as Kelly’s Directories. Similar in many ways to today’s Yellow Pages in that they listed all the businesses and trades people connected to a village, they also gave details of the local gentry, landowners, charities and facilities.
